Last Spring the Summit Girls Lacrosse Team were victorious in the Tournament of Champions (TOC), proving themselves to be the number one ranked girls lacrosse team in the state of New Jersey.  Coming off from this remarkable win, the girls team hopes to continue their elite level of play.

This year the varsity girls lacrosse team will be coached by head coach Mike Walsh and assistant coach Mary Kate Renehan and captained by seniors Cece Webb, Jane Freeman, Lily Spinner, and Grace Matter.

To prepare for the season, the team's captains have been holding captain's practices, participated in an indoor league over the winter, and had various Friday training sessions as a team. These workouts have built team chemistry and showcased the team's talent. Despite losing many valuable seniors from last year, the girls team will continue to showcase their skill in the upcoming season.

This season the girls lacrosse team will be competing against a tough schedule, playing rivals such as Oak Knoll, and other top ranked teams, both in and out of state. Like last year, the girls hope to take home different titles, including winning the county title, which the girls have not won since 2019, despite being state champions last year.

Going off a state title, the Summit Girls Lacrosse team is the team to beat this 2023 season. Captain Cece Webb reflects on the change between this year and last year's varsity team, “Our team last year worked really hard to achieve the TOC win, and in the process, put a target on the back of the 2023 team. We are a different team from the 2022 TOC team and we know that. We lost a lot of impactful players, but we are gaining some really talented freshmen. Teams in NJ and out of state want to beat us, and we are going to bring everything we have plus a little bit more to defend the reputation that the 2022 team helped create.”

Grace Matter shares similar insight, “Coming off of a huge TOC victory last year, our team has a target on its back. However, we are not the same team as last year, and it will be very important that we stay focused and maintain a high work rate to create new successes this season. Our team is strong this year, and we have a wide variety of talented players. I am confident that we will utilize our talent and team chemistry to be successful this year.”

Coach Walsh, the head coach of the varsity team, speaks about the upcoming season, “I'm excited for the season, we have a great group of seniors and a lot of talent. We had a wonderful season and experience last year, but that was last year and this is this year. We are excited to play a challenging schedule and show how hard we have worked and prepared for the season.” -Emily Sensenich
