Starting the 2023 season with 4 juniors, 8 sophomores, and 4 freshmen, Summit Varsity Softball had its youngest team seen in years. Although we had no seniors, the team had one of the most memorable seasons to date. Since we were not able to have a Senior Night, we instead hosted a successful Pack The Stands where parents, friends, and younger players came to see Summit overtake Scotch Plains 9-8.  Ally Liguori (DH) and Mackenna Welsh (1st base) both hit home runs for an early lead. Rebecca Harris (center field) hit an impressive triple as well. Caroline Putnam (catcher) clinched the win with a hard base hit, allowing Kaitlynn Malloy (2nd base) to score the winning run. Anna Heil (right field) was awarded player of the game by a representative from Bubbakoos and she received a free burrito! Not only did she hit a home run at Pack The Stands, but Mackenna Welsh hit a grand slam at the GL Tournament in April and another grand slam during our first county game!

 

In addition to our efforts on the field, Summit Softball has also dedicated the season to Morgan’s Message. Morgan’s Message is an organization created to stop the stigma surrounding athlete mental health. Student Ambassador, Lena Kifnidis (an injured member of the team) brought in Cayden Jean, a sports psychology student at Seton Hall, to talk to the team. We also made posters for a dedication game we hosted at the beginning of Mental Health Month in May.
